Neenah, WI – The Neenah High School Runner’s High Program started in 2008 as a part of their Student Assistant Program (SAP). Throughout the course, students learn more about addictions and other personal challenges that may affect society, family, and school performance.
In addition, the Runner’s High Program trains students for the Cellcom Green Bay Half Marathon, being held this year on May 16, 2010.
“The overall goal of the course is to help young people cease and control harmful behaviors and turn their energy into something positive,” said Trent Gilman, Neenah High School Teacher and program instructor. “Student Assistant Programs were originally designed to help students with alcohol and drug problems. Today, these programs have evolved to address all issues that may impact student success.”
To participate in the course, students must have either worked with Neenah High School SAP or have gone through treatment outside of the school district. The program is supported by annual grants and donations to help provide students with materials including appropriate running gear.
“The overall goal of the marathon is to give back to the community,” said Sean Ryan, race director of the Cellcom Green Bay Marathon. “We love seeing programs like this, especially ones that use the marathon to teach healthy habits and help youth develop positive passions in life.”
Eight students will be participating in the half marathon this year as a part of the Runner’s High program.
