Green Roof to be installed at Glas on April 13

Green roof plants - pre-installation

Sturgeon Bay, WI  – With the eco-friendly construction of the Cellcom and Glas building in Sturgeon Bay, a green roof was planned to cap off the construction. The plants were grown over the winter and are set to be installed on April 13.

The green roof will be installed above Glas, on the deck of the Seomrai Glas Company Apartment. Along with the aesthetic benefits for apartment visitors, there are a number of environmental benefits that tie-in with an overall mission of Glas to be an environmentally-friendly local business.

The green roof collects excess rainwater and self-irrigates, creating less storm water run-off. It also supplies clean oxygen, acting as a natural filter for the air. The roof will also lessen an effect known as ‘urban heat island’, which describes the difference in temperature between urban areas and their rural surroundings. Glas took initial steps during construction to reduce the size of their parking lot to decrease this effect, and the plants will take it a step further by significantly reducing roof temperatures. Other benefits include lower air conditioning bills and a longer roof life.

“Glas is the Gaelic word for ‘green’, which not only reflects on our Irish heritage but also on our commitment to protecting the environment,” said Mick O’Malley, Director of Internal Controls and Operations for Glas. “From the demolition of the former building to the construction of the new building to the interior furnishings, equipment and products, we have demonstrated our concern for the environment and our new roof will help us continue to do so.”
