The Femto Forum, an organization dedicated to promoting femtocell technology worldwide, is hosting a Media Roundtable today at the International CTIA Wireless 2010 Conference in Las Vegas. Cellcom’s executive vice president and director of corporate development, Rob Riordan, is on the panel of industry experts for the Roundtable. Cellcom is one of three telecom companies to be invited to participate in the event. Other spokespersons include representatives from AT & T and Sprint.
Members of the media and analysts from across the country will be attending the Media Roundtable to get the latest updates on femto technology and the rapid market adoption of femtocells. This session is part of CTIA-The Wireless Association® annual international conference.
Femtocells are wireless access points, typically designed for use in a home or small business, and connect to the service provider’s network via broadband. Current designs typically support two to four active mobile phones in a residential setting, and eight to 16 active mobile phones in enterprise settings.
Riordan says femto technology is big news for consumers, “A femtocell can extend mobile service coverage indoors, especially where access would otherwise be limited, congested or unavailable.” Femtocells also offer significantly improved data speeds, which may be even more important, given the dramatic increase in mobile data in recent years.
As the technology continues to evolve, femtocells will enable many compelling, innovative new services in the future.
Three continents have tier-one commercial femtocell deployment, and the U.S. has one of the most competitive femtocell markets.
